TRACK03 / FRAGMENTACIÓ /Fragmentation is the rule Unity is not taught in school Making The Nature Scene - Sonic Youth
The concept of "fragmentation" is implicit in this particular videoclip in different ways. To start with, in the musical composition: musician and producer from Girona Zésar (member of the band Dirty Club and performer of the Desmemòria theme that opens Sonesnat) used several samplers of jazz standards to construct the musical theme, so this was his interpretation of musical fragments. A sampler is a digital device that samples sound sequences to play or transform them using effects, although through metonymy the term ordinarily refers to the sequence itself, the fragment itself. For the visual part of the videoclip, Russo took the idea of fragmentation literally by applying it to the pig slaughter, fragmentation by dissecting its body. The result refers first to the documentary genre. The slaughter montage follows a chronological order, acquiring a dimension that is even educational. The sequence of images speeds up towards the end, acquiring a pace that is more typical in videoclips. Secondly, a certain delight in the most scatological passages via close-ups (cascades of viscera, marrow and cartilage) reminds us of the cinematographic genre called splatter, a branch of gore that is particularly explicit and infused with generous doses of black humour. There is plenty of it in Fragmentació, with that final blow, plain and brutal: from the pig's entrails to your stomach. And what is fragmented becomes fragmented one again, thus making a perfect circle. The English lyrics of the Fragmentació theme have a curious effect on the end result; all the Anglo-Saxon projection of these recurrent whispered sentences like "fragmentation of my soul" or "I feel free, yeah" and the jazz samplers themselves, contrast – much to my delight - with such a traditional, rural rite as the pig slaughter.
